What You Need to Know About Babies & Blankets

Blankets are a soft staple that make it easy to stay warm and sleep soundly. However, these items can pose a risk for infants, especially in their first 12–18 months of life. Make sure you understand the safety precautions you should take, as well as how you can safely use blankets to cuddle your baby.

Blanket Precautions for Babies

The most important thing to know about babies and blankets is that blankets can pose a serious safety risk if they are placed in the crib with the baby. For small babies, research has found that having a blanket in the crib can increase the risk of a child experiencing suffocation, strangulation, entrapment, or sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

Because small babies aren’t strong enough to move themselves out of a position that makes it harder to breathe, the presence of a blanket, bumper, stuffed animal, pillow, top sheet, or any other soft item in the crib poses a significant suffocation hazard. The crib should contain only a fitted sheet, and your baby can sleep in warm pajamas or a sleep sack.

An exception to this rule exists for babies from zero to two months, who can be safely put to sleep in a tied and tightened swaddle. After two months of age, babies start learning to roll over, which is why you should remove the swaddle to reduce risk.

The American Academy of Pediatrics hasn’t released a standard age for when blankets are safe to leave in the crib with an infant, but many medical professionals agree that waiting until an infant is at least 12 months old—and ideally 18 months of age—is best for safe sleep.

How to Use Blankets for Babies

Even when your baby is small enough that blankets are not recommended inside the crib, a warm, soft blanket is still a wonderful item to have outside of the crib. These soft blankets can bring comfort to both you and your baby.

A soft blanket made out of minky material is perfect for helping the baby feel safe and comfortable while being held or fed. We even offer a wearable baby bunting option that’s soft, so you’ll want to cuddle all day.

You can also lay a blanket down on the floor to provide a soft, clean place for your baby to lay down, play, or have tummy time. A blanket is also a good place to lay your baby during changing time since it’s soft and easily washed.

Once your baby is old enough to safely snuggle with blankets inside their crib, you can use one of our beautiful crib sets to provide a warm, safe environment for sleeping.
